Customer Rating: Summary: Beats Bottled Water in Every Way! Comment: I purchased two of these dispensers in January 2008. One I keep in my refrigerator, the other on the counter top. I purchased four four-packs of filters with the units, and I still have two of those left, after almost a year of daily use. I absolutely love these dispensers and have had absolutely no problem with leakage or anything else.
The dispenser is very easy to carry with insert-handles on either side that are easily gripped. When the dispenser is almost empty I take it to the sink, fill it up and then wait for the water to filter down a little bit before returning it to the area where I keep it. It is true that the filtering sometimes takes an hour or more to complete but I have not found that to be a problem. Pur recommends not using the water until the filtration process is complete, although the company doesn't state why.
The dispenser holds 144 ounces or 1.125 gallons. The filters are stated to efficiently filter 40 gallons before replacement is recommended. Therefore, you can fill up one dispenser 35 times before you'll need to replace the filter. To be on the safe side I usually replace the filter after 30 fill-ups. It's easy to keep track of the number of times you fill up the tank by simply marking the decal that comes with each filter or using a little notebook to check off the refill times. Thus, I would not recommend topping it off after every use like some reviewers stated they do, because it would be difficult to keep track of how much water the filter has actually processed.
Earlier this year, information regarding the danger of certain plastics containing BPAs came to light. I have not been able to determine what type of plastic these containers are made of, and thus don't know if this dispenser poses any problems regarding BPA contamination. I do hope that Pur and/or Brita will soon offer a stainless steel dispenser which will eliminate that concern. Of course, stainless steel dispensers will be heavier, however, I think the trade-off is worth the peace of mind.
In the meantime, this dispenser is convenient, easy to use and provides a far less expensive and far more 'green' way of drinking filtered water.
Customer Rating: Summary: A Better Choice Comment: I've used Brita filtered water pitchers for a number of years. While I have no problems with their filtering capabilities, pitchers invariably end-up becoming a hassle to use. The problem is simple. You want a glass of filtered water. You pour unfiltered water into the top of the pitcher. You can either stand there for several minutes waiting until the filter has finished doing its job, or start pouring when enough water has trickled-down through the filter to fill your glass. The top-heavy pitcher then ends-up dumping unfiltered water into your glass or the top of the pitcher falls off and spills water everywhere. This is common to all brands of pitchers I have seen, since NONE of them secure the lid to the top of the pitcher, let alone provide a water-tight seal. Being top-heavy also makes them prone to falling over.
The PUR DS-1800Z solves that problem quite easily. The unit simply sits somewhere in a corner of your refrigerator. It holds enough water that it doesn't need to be emptied out nearly as often as those small, filtered pitchers, and actually takes advantage of gravity (rather than being a victim of it) in order to keep the unfiltered water from making a huge mess. You can start pouring water into your glass as soon as you pour the unfiltered water in, with no messes.
I've found that it is MUCH easier to pour unfiltered water into the large top opening of this unit if you just leave the top that comes with it off all of the time. Objects from your fridge that could possibly fall into the unit will not contaminate the clean water, since it sits in a section that is isolated from the top half. Still, it's probably best to keep this on or near a top shelf. It will make filling the unit much easier, anyway.
Pitchers are a pain to fill-up with their much smaller openings on top and flaps that have a bad tendency to close just as you are pouring water into them (especially on Brita pitchers!). You could remove the lid, but you wouldn't be able to pour any water (without making a mess) with the lid off using one of the pitcher designs. The pitcher design really seems to stress form over function, IMHO. Pretty much all of them seem cheaply made and poorly designed, the PUR units included.
For most people, I think that the PUR DS-1800Z water dispenser is a much better choice than traditional pitcher-shaped water filters. It's gravity-fed filtering system should also lead to much cleaner water than you would expect from a filter that uses faucet attachments as well. Gravity-fed systems will not force pollutants through filters with the high water pressure that those units tend to operate under.
Complaints? About the only one I have is the lack of an easy way to tell exactly when it is that you should change filters. Unfortunately, this is common to ALL filtering systems of this type. Although Brita includes an "LCD Display" on some of its pitcher-shaped water filters, the only thing that this "display" actually measures is how long it has been since you replaced the last filter. It's really just a cheap gimmick. How often you need to change the filter is not something that can be measured by time. It really depends upon how often you use these units and how dirty your water is to begin with. Again, this is not a problem specific to this model (or brand) or filter though.
FYI, the DS-1800Z holds 18 cups of water. I didn't see that particular spec listed on the Amazon.Com description page. It does say so on the front of the box though.
Customer Rating: Summary: Wonderful purchase! Comment: This item is a wonderful thing to have in the house. I bought this mostly because for some reason I will not just grab a glass of water from the tap to drink. I find myself either not drinking or having tea or juice. I am on a quest to drink more water. My tap water tastes good but this is fabulous. Basically tastes like nothing. I have been drinking much more water since I got it and am very happy with this purchase.
Customer Rating: Summary: great general household drinking filter Comment: For a small family this water filter is great - it's size doesn't take up much room on a counter or fridge shelf, our water tastes great and our son is drinking more water - the main thing we wanted! Simple to use etc.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great replacement for Dasani Comment: I loved Dasani since it had reverse-osmosis filtering. Did not like that I was paying premium for filtered tap water. Decided to try Pur to reduce plastic bottles and cost. I am completely happy. Pur is not as completely tasteless as Dasani but definitely more than acceptable. No smell and no particles. I love that my recycle bin is now much emptier each week.
The dispenser fits nicely in my side-by-side Kenmore and takes up much less space then I thought. Absolutely no drips once the faucet is closed. It comes with one filter and the 3-pack filter is a good buy on Amazon.
