Customer Rating: Summary: Good set for the average family (such as mine) Comment: These are heavy, well balanced, triple-riveted, forged knives with full tangs (metal fully extends into the handle) and black polymer handles. Besides the 8 steak knives, you get:
- 8" slicer
- 5.5" utility knife
- 7" bread knife
- 3.5" parer
- 5" boning knife
- 7.75" chef knife
- 6.75" Santoku
- 3" peeler
- kitchen shears (with bottle opener and... screwdriver?)
- a heavy solid wood block with sharpener
This set is, of course, Made in China but it appears to be a good quality product. Clearly, it's not a 'pro' set but, for our family needs, it's probably the best price/quality combination.
Note: I purchased as a Gold Box deal that came with some bonus cheese utensils, a Mezzaluna and some steak coupon for less so, it's probably fair to take away one star off a set that, otherwise, does not seem to have any major flaws.
Customer Rating: Summary: A Cut Above for Less Comment: After 13 months of use, I am extremely pleased with these knives. Their purchase was made after reviewing many other reviews and deciding that for their sale price of $80, I could accept less than the very best.
Overall, they are well finished, well-crafted and very impressive. Even my wife, who was not consulted, is extremely satisfied with them.
Unlike a few other reviewers, we have had absolutely no issues with rusting or staining. While we both hand wash the knives, my wife lets them drain ... of course, I dry them immediately (if I've washed them).
We make use of the built in sharpener, which seems to work quite well. We also run the knives on a sharpening steel from time-to-time. I've never run them thru our electric sharpener, as they are so easily sharpened by hand. They are easily the sharpest and easiest to sharpen knives that we've ever owned.
Finally, the Santuku-type (sp?) blade is great. An unexpected treat and unbelievably useful. It's small hollows even allow it to slice block cheese easily.
I do have a few minor negatives: The bread knife is too short (most men would always like a little extra), the scissors come apart for cleaning too easily, and there is no slot for a sharpening steel.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Knives! Comment: What a great value! The built in sharpener is wonderful. We love to cook and this has added to the ease of preparation! Highly recommended!
Customer Rating: Summary: Initial quality Comment: Just recieved this item and intial inspection reveal no complaints, as mentioned earlier in misfits I noticed none.
Customer Rating: Summary: NOT CHICAGO CULTLERY QUALITY Comment: ORDERED AS A REPLACEMENT FOR CHICAGO CUTLERY BLOCK SET I HAVE HAD FOR ABOUT 7 YEARS, LOOKING FOR MORE STEAK KNIVES; QUALITY IS NO WHERE NEAR THE SAME. THE KNIVES FROM THE ORIGINAL SET ARE IN GREAT CONDITION WITH NO HANDLE ISSUES. NEW KNIVES WEIGH HALF AS MUCH AND BLADE APPEARS VERY THIN.
GOOD PRICE FOR PRODUCT IF I HAD NOTHING ELSE TO COMPARE IT TO.
